Tree of Smoke: A Novel
Tree of Smoke by Denis Johnson: Pages 102 - 116

Go to the beginning

(Brought to you by kat impatientreader.com)  Skip borrows a motorcycle and journeys to Father Carignan's remote hamlet.  The priest welcomes him and impresses Skip as a kindly soul who would not be remotely capable of running guns to the Muslims.

Carignan mentions that Skip is not the first visitor to these parts: Carignan has met the colonel, and he just yesterday heard about a Filipino soldier (Aguinaldo) and another man (the German assassin) on the river in a palm-boat.  Skip receives this news, shocked that the colonel sent him on a fact-finding mission but didn't tell him the other two would be involved.

We switch to Carignan's viewpoint. An old Filipino man stops by, and they eat pineapple and discuss mystical visions.  The next day, Carignan delivers the evening Mass to his tiny congregation and Skip.  He goes right off the rails, ranting about Judas and confessing his guilt over being unkind to his grandmother long ago.

After the Mass, Carignan goes off alone to bathe in the river. His last sight is the German assassin aiming a blowgun at him: the dart strikes his neck, the poison enters his body, and he collapses dead in the river.

We switch to Skip's viewpoint; he wanders down to the river, wondering if Aguinaldo and the German are sneaking about. Then he sees the priest's dead body floating with the current. He manages to retrieve Carignan's body (which has a dart in its neck).

Instead of heading straight back to Manila, Skip returns to Damulog and spends three weeks hanging around having sex with Kathy Jones.  He sends in a carefully worded report that contains little or no information about the priest's supposed gun-running contacts or his death.
