Tree of Smoke by Denis Johnson: Pages 65 - 102

Go to the Beginning

(Brought to you by kat impatientreader.com)  Now we're in Mindanao in the guilt-stricken viewpoint of Father Carignan.  It's not clear why he feels such guilt. At the request of Mayor Luis of Damulog, he journeys with three Muslim-Filipino guides to a remote location to identify and claim the body of another American: Christian missionary Timothy Jones of the Seventh Day Adventist church.

Meanwhile Skip journeys to the town of Malaybalay in Mindanao, and has dinner at an Italian restaurant. A white lady at an adjacent table keeps staring at him; she comes up and introduces herself as Kathy Jones (she is the widow of the missionary Timothy Jones).

To Skip, she seems to be half-crazy and too flirtatious; he finds himself taken aback at her neediness. She sees his uncertainty, and runs out of the restaurant, leaving him to pay for both of their dinners.  The next day, Skip takes the bus on to Damulog.

We switch to Kathy's viewpoint the next morning as she waits for the bus to Damulog where she lives. She realizes that she's known for a while that her missing husband Timothy must be dead.  She feels mortified that she threw herself at the American stranger (Skip) at the restaurant last night, but he reminded her of her husband.  Now she sees Skip boarding the same bus she wants to catch, and she decides to wait for the next one.

She gets to Damulog in the afternoon in the rain, and encounters Skip again in a café. A local cop asks Skip's name; he supplies it, and then immediately endears himself to all the Filipinos when he asks them to call him by his nickname. She and Skip chat briefly while not acknowledging their previous encounter at the Italian restaurant.

Skip gets drawn into conversation with the Filipino men, and Kathy goes home to her empty house. She obsesses over her husband and his books on Calvinism.

The next morning, Kathy meets with eight Filipino nurse's aides whom she is training.  She visits Mayor Luis and wearily deflects his probing questions about Skip, the American colonel, the Filipino (Major Aguinaldo), and the "Swiss" (the German assassin), all of whom have been spotted in the area.  Kathy says she's only met Skip and also the colonel once.

In the company of an acquaintance named Edith, Kathy runs into Skip. They have a tense conversation:  he claims to work for Del Monte fruit company, and she thinks he's a spy.  She peppers him with Mayor Luis's questions about the colonel, the Filipino, and the "Swiss." He seems startled that these men have been spotted in the area.  Just then Mayor Luis shows up to give Kathy her husband's wedding ring, and says that they have Timothy's physical remains at his house.

We then switch to Skip's viewpoint that night. He goes to Kathy's house, obviously hoping to get lucky with the grieving widow. She invites him in and they have sex.  He feels awkward and ugly, and she seems angry with her husband for being dead. For four nights, Skip hangs around Damulog, experiencing Catholic guilt and having sex with Kathy.
