Spin by Robert Charles Wilson. Hugo Award
(Brought to you by kat impatientreader.com) This complicated science fiction story starts slow but ultimately reels you in. Our hero is a doctor. His best friend is a genius, and he loves his best friend's sister from afar. When he's 12, a mysterious shield appears around the Earth that freezes Earth in slow-time. So when a few decades pass on Earth, billions of years pass out in the solar system. No one knows where this shield comes from, but they're afraid that if it ever goes away, Earth will be consumed by the sun which has been expanding all these years.
In an ingenious plot twist, Earth gets some rocket-craft through the shield to take organisms to Mars. Out there in the "normal time" solar system, Mars can be terra-formed and even settled by humans over the centuries while only a year or two passes back on earth. That might give the Mars-evolved humans a chance to help us work on the problem. The plot goes on, getting more complicated as our hero finds out the unexpected origins of the planetary shield. Very good writing, and a compelling story. You can find Spin on Amazon.com through this link:
