(Brought to you by jat impatientreader.com)  Chigurh goes into town and asks a city worker where Moss works. She refuses to tell him, and he leaves when he sees there's someone else in the office. He takes a look at one of the envelopes he's taken from their trailer and sees they've made calls to Odessa and Del Rio. He calls the number in Del Rio but no one answers.

He then calls to Odessa and a woman answers the phone. He asks if Moss is there, but the woman on the other end gets suspicious. He hangs up and gets a cup of coffee. Chigurh then goes to the garage where Moss works and asks the men there if they've seen him. They say they haven't, and ask him if there's something they can help him with.  He says no, and starts driving back towards town.

Moss gets off the bus in Del Rio and gets a taxi to take him to a motel. He gets a room at a weekly rate and takes his bags to the room. He unscrews the air duct cover and looks inside, then takes the cord from the venetian blinds and ties it to the briefcase with the money. Moss gets a thousand dollars out of the briefcase, then pushes the briefcase into the air duct and puts the air duct cover back on.

He sleeps for a while, then calls a cab and goes into Mexico. He goes to a pharmacy and buys bandages to patch up his feet, then goes to a restaurant and has dinner. After that he goes back to the hotel, but thinks that there's someone in the room and tells the cab driver to take him to another motel. He stays the night there, and then thinks about what he has to do.

He goes to the sporting goods store and buys a twelve gauge shotgun, and then goes to the hardware store and buys a hacksaw and some other tools. He goes back to the sporting goods store and asks the clerk if he has any aluminum tent poles. The clerk says they don't sell them apart from the tent, so Moss buys a tent with the poles and leaves the tent in the store, taking the poles with him.

He goes back to the new room and saws off the barrel and the stock of the shotgun, then loads it. He leaves the gun under the mattress and goes out again, this time getting clothes at a Wal-Mart. He takes the sawed-off gun barrel and stock and throws them in a nearby lake.

In the next scene, Bell is reminiscing again about how he became sheriff at twenty-five and his time in the service. He thinks about how lucky he was to meet his wife, and how they've been married for thirty-one years, and that most people don't realize how lucky they've been in their lives.

Bell shows up at the cafe and gets breakfast and reads the paper about the dead deputy. He picks up Wendell and they go to Moss's trailer and notice that the cylinder of the lock's been pushed in. Wendell asks him if he thinks they're far behind Moss, and Bell says he thinks they aren't.

Bell is back in the cafe in the next scene when a reporter comes up to him and starts asking questions about what's been happening around town. Bell doesn't answer though, and when he's finished with his breakfast he takes Torbert and starts driving back to Moss' truck.

A helicopter shows up; it's a DEA agent named McIntyre, and he asks Bell some questions. Bell answers him, and takes him down to where the other trucks and bodies are. They talk about what happened, and how there's probably someone who's escaped the scene. More law enforcement shows up to remove the bodies.

Chigurh is tracking the briefcase through a transponder, and he's tracked it down to just outside of Del Rio. He tries to shoot a bird with a pistol that has a silencer secured to the barrel. He misses and it flies off.

Moss comes back to the hotel he originally was staying in and asks if he can have another room besides the one he has already. The clerk says yes and gives him the key. He goes to the room and unscrews the air duct cover and looks inside, He can barely see the end of the briefcase
