No Country for Old Men by Cormac McCarthy: Pages 41 - 60
Go to the beginning. Go to the end
(Brought to you by jat impatientreader.com) In the next chapter a man names Bell answers the phone. He is the lawman who was talking at the beginning of the book. The call is about a cat stuck in a tree. He then gets a radio call from one of his deputies, Torbert. He and a deputy named Wendell go out to meet up with Torbert on the side of a road close by. There, in the trunk of a car, they find the body of the first man that Chigurh murdered.
Bell sees that the victim was shot cleanly in the head with a wadcutter bullet. He leaves the body in the trunk and tells Torbert to drive with it up to Austin. Bell starts heading back home and sees a hawk dead in the road. He takes it to the side of the road and looks out on the countryside.
He goes to the Sheriff's office and says that something has happened: it's the deputy that Chigurh killed in the first chapter of the book. The sheriff says he wants to find the person who did it and kill him himself, and Bell says he can't blame him. Bell is afraid they are going to need everyone they can get before the whole thing is over.
In the next scene, Moss has taken the bus back home to where his wife is waiting. He has her make breakfast for him, and then tells her that she needs to go to Odessa right away. She asks him why, but when he tells her she won't quite believe him. He wants her go to her mother in Odessa, and he'll get in contact with her later.
Chigurh is in the next scene, stopping at a gas station. He starts talking to the owner of the gas station in a manner that suggests he wants to start a fight. He then asks the attendant to call a coin flip in the air. When the attendant asks him what for, Chigurh says he's putting up his whole life. The man doesn't understand and calls heads. He uncovers the coin, and it's heads. Chigurh asks the man not to put the coin in his pocket, and walks out. The man doesn't understand that he's just barely escaped with his life.
Chigurh drives to where the story began and finds the two men that were chasing Moss earlier there. They ride together to Moss's truck, where Chigurh pries off the vehicle inspection plates from the inside of the door frame. They go down to the bodies and Chigurh asks one of the men if they can get anything on the box. One says no. Chigurh turns around and kills both of them with a pistol shot, then leaves the scene.
