(Brought to you by jat impatientreader.com)  Moss tells the girl that she is hanging around him just because she wants to see some action without consequences, but she denies it. The waitress brings their food, and they talk about where they are from and where they are going. He gives her one thousand dollars and tells her to go to California.

They go out to the truck, and she asks him why he trusts her with the keys, when she could have taken off in the truck. He says that he would have gone after her and beat her up when he caught up to her. She asks him if he'd really do that, and he says what do you think?

They drive to a town called Van Horn and stop to eat. Moss asks her if anyone knows where she's at, but she's evasive with the answers. They talk about knowing where they are at in life, and how to get there. He gets her a room at the motel nearby, and then goes off to get a beer.

He tells her he knows she's too young to have a beer, but asks if she'd like to have one with him anyway. She does, and then she asks if he'd like to sit and drink it with her. He does, and they talk some more about where they are going. He tells her he's heading to El Paso, and she asks if he's married and he says yes.

He eventually tells her the whole story about what's going on and who's after him, and she asks what he does for a living and he tells her he's a welder, which she doesn't really believe. He tells her that she should be careful, and use the money he gave her to take a bus from El Paso to California. She asks if he would have really beaten her if she'd taken his truck, and he says no. He goes to get a cup to share the last beer.

In the next scene, Chigurh is taking his car through a car wash at a truck stop. The car has blood on it, and he washes it off and drives down the highway.

Bell has received a call and is heading to Van Horn. He sees a car burning on the side of the road as he's headed out there, but he doesn't stop since he sees police already there. He reaches Van Horn and finds the motel.

The sheriff there is questioning a man, but stops when he sees Bell pull up. Bell asks what's going on and the sheriff says there's been a shootout. Two men and a woman were shot, and one of the men isn't expected to make it. He tells Bell that the witness (the man being questioned) had said someone had pulled a girl out of a room, and then a man came out of another room with a gun but when he saw a gun to the girl's head he had put his own gun down.

The assailant then shot the girl and then the man who came out of the room and the man managed to shoot the assailant in return.  The sheriff doesn't believe this. Bell notices a black Barracuda in the parking lot and asks the sheriff about it. He then asks if he can see the bodies.

They go to the local clinic where the bodies have been taken. He goes to the room where the bodies were taken and pulls the sheet back on one. It is Moss, and he's been shot a number of times. The other body is that of the young hitchhiker that Moss was with. The sheriff asks if Bell knows him, and Bell says no, but he does have to tell his wife.
