alfred nobel, wikipedia, public domainFor those who are curious, the Nobel Prize for Literature is awarded each autumn to a writer's complete body of work, and consists of a medal and cash equal to 10,000,000 Swedish Crowns (SEK). This is equivalent to about $1,462,575.88 United States dollars.

Alfred Nobel (1833-1896), a Swede who also happened to invent dynamite, established the Literature Prize (along with the Prizes for Chemistry, Economics, Medicine, Peace, and Physics). The Swedish Academy nominates and selects the prize winners for literature, among the world's best writers. 

Mr. Nobel would have frowned upon the following categories because he believed that one's work was more important than one's nationality and personal characteristics. Which is true, but nevertheless ...
