BOOK REVIEW

hismajestysdragonHis Majesty's Dragon (Temeraire 1) by Naomi Novik.
Hugo nominee

(Brought to you by kat impatientreader.com)  Captain Laurence of the British navy captures a French ship during the Napoleonic wars only to find a dragon egg on board. When the young male dragon hatches and bonds with him, Laurence must give it a name (Temeraire) and give up his privileged life as an officer and a gentleman to join the rough, outsider elite known as the Aerial Corps (of British aviators who, with their intelligent talking dragons, fight their French equivalents).

In this alternate history world, dragons are an accepted fact, bred for combat, and each possess a distinctive personality. The funniest exchanges take place between the huge and earnest Regal Copper Dragon Maximus and his cranky yet devoted aviator Berkley.

This extraordinary book is written in pitch-perfect Jane-Austen style, which is most obvious in the gleefully rendered Masterpiece-Theater-type dialog. It also displays breathtaking realism in portraying historical combat and life in the British military. Very original and very highly recommended!  You can find His Majesty's Dragon on Amazon.com through this link:
