Go to the Beginning Chapter 12: (Brought to you by kat impatientreader.com) Richard, returning from London, gets to the Kano airport to switch planes to Lagos. He chats with the Igbo personnel in Igbo as he disembarks. Suddenly Hausa soldiers rush in and kill the all the Igbos right in front of him. He manages to get to Lagos where he drops in on his ex-lover Susan who is completely drunk. He goes to her bathroom to cry. Chapter 13: Olanna returns to Nsukka and has a break-down: confined to bed with panic attacks, she can't walk. Odenigbo and Ugwu nurse her back to recovery. Then the Igbo decide to split off eastern Nigeria to form their own independent republic of Biafra: their leader Ojukwu gives a speech on the radio and Odenigbo and Olanna are filled with hope. They attend a rally and wave the new Biafran flag, which is striped in red, black, and green with half a yellow sun in its center. Chapter 14: Richard visits an Igbo family in Obosi to offer his condolences for their son whose death he witnessed at the Kano airport. He returns to Port Harcourt and writes passionately about the Igbo people, but the international press is uninterested in publishing his essays. He attends a rally at which the Igbo express hope that Nigeria will let them go peacefully to form Biafra. He runs into Olanna at the rally, and they talk awkwardly with the yet-unnamed "bad event" that also involves Kainene and Odenigbo hanging over them. Chapter 15: Ugwu and Olanna and Odenigbo hear on the radio that Nigerian troops are embarking on a police action to bring back the rebels of Biafra. Federal troops enter Nsukka. Ugwu, Olanna, and Odenigbo evacuate with Baby, driving east with the rest of the Biafrans. Chapter 16: Richard attempts to drive from Port Harcourt to Nsukka to pick up his manuscripts and his houseboy Harrison. Biafran soldiers turn him back, and are not impressed when he declares in Igbo that he is Biafran. Chapter 17: Olanna, Odenigbo, and Ugwu relocate to Odenigbo's house in Abba, which is right next door to his mother's. Odenigbo asks Olanna to marry him, and she agrees. Her parents show up briefly to say that they are leaving Nigeria for London and have two tickets for her and Kainene. She tells them she's staying on. She and Odenigbo attend a pro-Biafran rally led by the elders of Abba; they argue about her old boyfriend Mohammed, and Odenigbo callously alludes to how the Hausa soldiers tortured pregnant Igbo women (knowing that Olanna's break-down in Chapter 13 was caused by seeing her cousin's dead body). The next morning, Olanna goes to her grandparents' village of Umunnachi to tell them what she witnessed in Kano. They are very upset. She drives back to Abba. Chapter 18: Ugwu, Olanna, and Odenigbo evacuate Abba along with the other Biafrans just a step ahead of the Nigerian (Hausa) troops. They relocate to a squalid shanty in the refugee town of Umuahia. Odenigbo's mother insists on remaining behind in Abba. Odenigbo will work at the Manpower Directorate, and Olanna will teach primary school. Several of Odenigbo's old friends begin stopping by in the evenings to argue politics just like the old days. Olanna and Odenigbo arrange a simple wedding that gets interrupted by an air raid. Part Three -The Early Sixties. Note to readers: Here's where the author goes back in time about four years to catch us up on exactly what happened between Odenigbo, Olanna, Richard, and Kainene. Chapter 19: Ugwu is shocked to see Odenigbo's mother Mama (and her slave/companion Amala) show up at the Nsukka house for a second visit; after all, the first visit in Chapter 4 ended with Mama driving Olanna from the house. But now Olanna is vacationing in London. Ugwu fears that Mama may try some black magic, especially when she starts putting strange herbs in her son's food. He remains suspicious as Mama gets Odenigbo and his guests drunk on palm wine. Later that night, Ugwu witnesses Amala sneaking out of Odenigbo's bedroom. Mama has tempted Odenigbo to be unfaithful in order to break him up with Olanna. |
