Gone Baby Gone by Dennis Lehane: Pages 400 - 412
Go to the beginning.
(Brought to you by jat impatientreader.com) Angela begs Devin not to call the police; she thinks Amanda is much better off where she is. They argue with her that it's the law, that they have to arrest Doyle, but she is going by pure emotion at this point. She asks Patrick to stop them, but he won't do it. She tells them that she'll never forgive them for this, and storms off. They arrest Jack Doyle and his wife and Oscar takes Amanda away.
In the epilogue, Patrick describes the reunion of Amanda and Helene, covered by the TV news. Bubba is helping Angela move out. Patrick goes to ask Angela if everything is ok, she clearly doesn't want to talk to him. Bubba asks one more time what he did, and Patrick tells him that he broke her heart.
We find out that Doyle, his wife and Lionel are brought up on charges of kidnapping and child endangerment/negligence. Doyle is also brought up on murder charges. Ryerson makes it, and Patrick is brought in to testify. Rachel Broussard and her son disappear. Patrick stops by Helene's house several months later, and finds her ready to go out to the bar. He asks if someone is going to watch Amanda, and she says her friend Dottie will watch her as soon as she tells her about it. He leaves, wondering he had done the right thing, and deciding, in the end, that he had. The last scene of the book goes back to the people in the first scene, where Rachel Smith is asked what's worth dying for. She says, without a moment's hesitation, my family, and that's the only thing. Go to the the beginning of the synopsis of Gone Baby Gone Go to the Index of Summaries What to Read Next!
