BOOK REVIEW

clutterslaststandClutter's Last Stand by Don Aslett.

(Brought to you by kat impatientreader.com)  I've read three of Aslett's  books, and I think he has a terrific sense of humor as well as valuable insights into why we amass clutter and how we can get rid of it. His books are informative and unputdownable (because of the many entertaining anecdotes).

I have read a LOT of organizing books and often the author's tone is condescending, sarcastic, or patronizing.  Aslett never makes that mistake, and many of his anecdotes concern himself.  He even has a carefully maintained and dusted collection of "toilet-shaped" memorabilia and souvenirs!

As both the owner of a successful cleaning business and as someone whose parents must have been directly affected by the Great Depression (often such parents teach us to hang onto clutter), he is qualified to help us with our clutter issues. And this book is geared to helping you GET RID of your clutter, not organize it in ever more intricate ways until it reaches critical mass in your closets.

Why did I give it four stars rather than five? As valuable and worthwhile as it is, it needs an update in a few areas.

First, written in the mid-1980s, it doesn't address computers, scanners, the internet, and compact disk storage at all. Computer technology has revolutionized what you can store, particularly photographs and text.

Second, the book doesn't address identity-theft which became a problem in the 1990s. An added sentence or two reminding readers to shred documents containing their social security numbers, etc., would be helpful.

Third, he advises that you get rid of old medication by flushing it down the toilet! I've heard this is a real bad idea because it can get in our waterways. Instead, I've heard you should grind up your old medication and mix it with water (to neutralize it so someone can't pick it out of your trash), and then toss it in your trash.

There's a lot of value in this book. I especially recommend it to wives who are trying to get their husbands to pare down the junk.  Sometimes men can be more open to another man giving them dejunking tips, especially when it's done with humor and not in a fussy, housekeeping sort of way.  You can find it at Amazon through this link:
